Beavers celebrated the Chinese New Year, which is the year of the Rooster, by sampling Chinese food, making lanterns and playing Chinese themed games. Some of the activities qualified the Beavers for part of their teamwork challenge badge. We now have an 11th Beaver mascot that spends a week at home with one of our members, who has to complete a diary about what adventures the mascot gets up to during his stay. Two Beavers have moved up to cubs and three new members joined us after half term.

Two very proud cubs were recently presented with their Chief Scouts Silver Award, the highest award in the cub section. Both Archie and Olivia have been valued members of the pack since moving from Beavers and are now looking forward to moving on to the Scout section. The Cub leaders hope that they will enjoy their time in Scouts as much as they have done in cubs.
In order to qualify for their Astronomer badge, recent activities have included learning about stars and planets and observing the night sky. There have also been themed pack meetings based on the Disability Awareness badge along with Environmental and Conservation challenges.

Both the Cub and Scout sections entered teams in the District swimming gala, at Spen Pool. Both teams acquitted themselves very well, considering the young age of many of them. The scouts were attempting to retain the trophy, finishing in a very creditable 3rd place.

The Scouts have had a very busy month, besides taking part in the Swimming gala, three members entered the District shooting competition, where they had a fantastic result; Charlotte, Katie and Evie being placed first, second and third respectively. Scouts may only take part in this competition, if they have already passed their Master at Arms Badge. Well done to all of you.
As part of the World and Creative Challenge, scouts have built bird nesting boxes and bat roosting boxes which have been erected at Fan Wood, our District campsite.

We have recently been informed of the death of Denis Mills; a friend of the 11th and former District Commissioner for Spen Valley.

The group is making plans for its’ main fund raising event of the year, the Summer Gala, held on Hunsworth recreation Ground adjacent to the HQ on Sunday 21st May. Already, we are collecting items suitable for raffle and tombola prizes, bottles, books and toys. Any donations would be gratefully received.
