Cub Scouts Reach For The Silver!

Posted on March 27th, 2012 by Webmaster

The highest award available to Cubs is the Chief Scout Silver Award. At 11th Spen Valley we’re honoured that two of our fantastic pack members have achieved this prestigious accolade.  The two young people have both displayed exceptional hard work and consistent effort in attaining the necessary badges and challenges, as a requirement of the Chief Scout Award. It is also a huge testament to the teamwork and leadership within our group, who have given encouragement and guidance in attaining the various badges.

Cubs are aged from 8 to 10 ½ years old, and therefore have just over two years to achieve the six demanding Challenge badges which lead to the Chief Scout Award. The six Challenge badges are the Creative Challenge, Community Challenge, Fitness Challenge, Global Challenge, Outdoor Challenge and Promise Challenge. Each require a range of detailed accomplishments and must all be earned within their time as a Cub.

Posted on March 20th, 2012 by Webmaster

We currently have 16 Cubs with 10 coming up from Beavers after Easter.  We have been very busy since Christmas doing a varied programme of activities. Some of the activities we have done include the home safety and emergency aid stages one and two badges. The Cubs have also enjoyed bringing in different things to show off their skills and hobbies out of scouting, some of these included Swimming, Gymnastics and martial arts.
During the coming year the cubs can look forward to doing their chef badge as well as completing their community challenge award. Also coming up is the big camp in may which is big opportunity for all the cubs to take part in a camping experience also their is the district Sixers and Seconders camp in June for all the older cubs to take part in.

Scouts Update March 2012

Posted on March 20th, 2012 by Webmaster

During January & February, the troop has been represented in three district competitions – 5 a side football, swimming & cooking, whilst we did not win any of them, the team of Samuel & Matthew were second in the cooking competition. Well done to everyone who took part in any of the events.
Whilst working towards the Global Challenge badge, the scouts learned about homelessness, the causes and effects that it can have on individuals and families.
To get a feel for how it might be for people sleeping rough, some of our hardy scouts slept the night in the archery range at Fan Wood, where the temperature reached a chilly minus 7 degrees C.
This was followed up by a visit to the Salvation Army in Batley, where we learned about the work carried out by the ‘army’ with homeless people. Finally the scouts have been asked to donate tinned food that can be donated to the ‘army’ for distribution to the needy.
During February half term, four scouts took part in a caving expedition in the Yorkshire Dales where despite the cold conditions; they had an enjoyable time underground.
Over the coming weeks, in preparation for the Fitness Challenge badge, scouts are taking part in a number of practice walks that will see them complete the 20Km Bah’t at walk (Ilkley moor bah’t at)
on the 29th April.

On the 30th March, our team of ‘eggheads’ will be defending the District scout quiz, which they won at last years’ event.

Beaver Update March 2012

Posted on March 19th, 2012 by Webmaster

We currently have 28 Beavers with 10 of those going up to Cubs after Easter.  We have been very busy this term doing all kinds of activities, a games night with new games played, blow painting and finger people painting where the beavers and helpers got quite messy, 2 weeks of mothers day card making and then the last two weeks will be dedicated to easter activities.
In the coming year we have the Big Camp where 10 of my Beavers are staying overnight. And we are organising a joint district Cub and Beaver Jubilee party at Fanwood on the 16th June.
I would like to thank my parent helpers without them we could not do the activities we do.
