Temporary Suspension of Face to Face Scouting

Good Afternoon Parents/Members and Supporters.

Following the Prime Minister’s announcement on Saturday 31st Oct 2020 I have the sad news to advise that face to face Scouting has been temporally suspended until at least Wednesday 2nd December 2020.

This means our planned visit this Saturday to Fanwood has unfortunately been cancelled.

We will however be meeting via Zoom this Friday and every Friday during this period so please come along and encourage you’re young person to take part.  I will send Zoom links out each week, and post them on Facebook and WhatsApp so please watch out for those.

I am aware that some young people don’t like the Zoom platform and meeting virtually, this is perfectly fine, if however they wish to look at some Scouting badges which can be done at home please have a look online at https://badges.bescouts.org.uk/ and click on the relevant section (Beavers/Cubs/Scouts) and it will show you a list of suitable badges.  To submit your evidence for each badge you can just click on the submit evidence link and choose (11th Spen Valley Scout Group) from the list and upload your files and they will be sent directly to the leaders.

As soon as these new restrictions are lifted I will be back in touch to discuss the 11th getting back to face to face Scouting, which hopefully should be before Christmas this year.

Please do keep in touch with us here at the group, either via our closed Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/groups/11thsv/) or via our new WhatsApp group.  If you need any further info on either of these then please let me know.

As always if anyone has questions or queries regarding this, then please don’t hesitate to come back to me.

Most of all please stay safe, and hopefully we will be back to face to face Scouting very soon.

Kind Regards

Michael.

Remembrance Parade 2018 – Sunday 11th November 2018

Once again we have been invited to join with the people of Hunsworth, East Bierley & Birkenshaw to come together to mark remembrance Sunday.

This is the day when people who have lost their lives in conflicts and wars all over the world are remembered, but this year is special because 2018 commemorates 100 years since the end of world war 1.

Please meet in the yard in front of Birkenshaw Church at 09:50 am, to parade to the memorial garden at East Bierley for a memorial service, followed by a two minutes silence at 11:00 am,

Parents and families are welcome to join us in the parade.

All members – wear smart uniform please, if you do not have official uniform trousers please wear school uniform type trousers.
It is likely to be cold so you should wear a warm coat (waterproof if wet) and perhaps a T-Shirt or similar under your uniform top.

Members should be collected from East Bierley at about 11:15 am.

Your Attendance would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Section Update – February 2017

Beavers celebrated the Chinese New Year, which is the year of the Rooster, by sampling Chinese food, making lanterns and playing Chinese themed games. Some of the activities qualified the Beavers for part of their teamwork challenge badge. We now have an 11th Beaver mascot that spends a week at home with one of our members, who has to complete a diary about what adventures the mascot gets up to during his stay. Two Beavers have moved up to cubs and three new members joined us after half term.

Two very proud cubs were recently presented with their Chief Scouts Silver Award, the highest award in the cub section. Both Archie and Olivia have been valued members of the pack since moving from Beavers and are now looking forward to moving on to the Scout section. The Cub leaders hope that they will enjoy their time in Scouts as much as they have done in cubs.
In order to qualify for their Astronomer badge, recent activities have included learning about stars and planets and observing the night sky. There have also been themed pack meetings based on the Disability Awareness badge along with Environmental and Conservation challenges.

Both the Cub and Scout sections entered teams in the District swimming gala, at Spen Pool. Both teams acquitted themselves very well, considering the young age of many of them. The scouts were attempting to retain the trophy, finishing in a very creditable 3rd place.

The Scouts have had a very busy month, besides taking part in the Swimming gala, three members entered the District shooting competition, where they had a fantastic result; Charlotte, Katie and Evie being placed first, second and third respectively. Scouts may only take part in this competition, if they have already passed their Master at Arms Badge. Well done to all of you.
As part of the World and Creative Challenge, scouts have built bird nesting boxes and bat roosting boxes which have been erected at Fan Wood, our District campsite.

We have recently been informed of the death of Denis Mills; a friend of the 11th and former District Commissioner for Spen Valley.

The group is making plans for its’ main fund raising event of the year, the Summer Gala, held on Hunsworth recreation Ground adjacent to the HQ on Sunday 21st May. Already, we are collecting items suitable for raffle and tombola prizes, bottles, books and toys. Any donations would be gratefully received.

2 Cubs Reach for the Silver!

Congratulations go to Archie and Olivia who were presented with Chief Scouts Silver award on Friday by Akela (Michael Holroyd)  The Cubs who have taken part in various activities including learning about our world, learning new sills, camping, fire lighting and how to work as part of team, were presented with the highest award that the Cubs can achieve and usually get this award just before they move to Scouts.  From all Cub leaders well done! and we hope you enjoy the activities in Scouts just as much as you have done in Cubs.

Section Update – January 2017

Our Beavers colony goes from strength to strength, with the number of members at a maximum. Our leadership team is at full stretch, and are grateful for the help of young leaders, 14 or 15 year olds who have all progressed through the group and are already putting something back, in addition to being members of the District Explorer Scout unit.
If there are any adults who would be prepared to help at our Beaver colony, please contact the group.

2016 was the year that cub scouts celebrated their 100th anniversary, during that time they took part in several ‘Cub 100’ events, including District Field day at Fan Wood and the County celebration camp at Bradley Wood. Friday 16th December was designated as the day when cubs throughout the UK would renew their promise together. Our cubs incorporated their renewal into the Christmas party celebrations at the HQ.
Girls and boys between the ages of 8 & 10 are always welcome to join our pack in Hunsworth.

As part of their Christmas celebration, the Scouts visited ‘Adrenaline’, an indoor trampoline park, with over 140 connected trampolines; great fun was had by all. This was followed by party food and games, back at the HQ.
The 2017 District competitions kicked off with the 5 a side football tournament which is run in two leagues, our team lost only one of their league matches, but this was not sufficient to get them into the final. The overall winners were the 7th Spen Valley (Gomersal)

Section Update – Dec 2016

Our Beavers have taken part in ‘My skills challenge’ and; as part of the Healthy eating challenge,
have been discovering how much sugar is found in some food and drinks, and why this may not be such a good thing.

Cubs have taken part in activities that will qualify them for the Community fire safety badge, whilst also enjoying a Halloween evening and a fire work party with the usual bonfire food. Three of our cubs have recently moved up to scouts and seem to have settled into the troop. Several cubs and leaders attended the remembrance Sunday, parade and service at East Bierley.

Scouts have taken part in Patrol and Troop forums, this enables members to, for example, propose future activities, present ideas for troop meetings and prepare menus for camps etc.
As part of the Creative challenge badge, scouts took part in a musical evening when they made a number of instruments which they used to accompany themselves whilst singing camp fire type songs. When did you last see a homemade tea chest base being played?
We have also made items such as key fobs, woggles and friendship bracelets from para cord (coloured nylon cord) along with whistles made for hollowed out branches.
Scouts and leaders also attended the remembrance service at East Bierley.
The month ended with the annual weekend at Wharfeside House in Kettlewell. The weather on Saturday was perfect for a Dales walk, frozen ground underfoot, cloudless blue sky and bright sunshine all day. After a village treasure hunt on Sunday morning, the weekend was rounded off with an afternoon visit to Skipton baths. A great weekend!
